The starter overrunning clutch forms the connection between the starter motor and the crankshaft. The overrunning clutch locks the components together when the engine starts and the engine speed exceeds the starter motor speed. Cracking and grinding noises during the starting process often indicate a fault with this component. Inactivity can lead to a complete failure of the engine casing.
